We welcome four new arrivals to PAWING! In mid April we were asked to assist with the care of some hens who were being well cared for, but due to unforseen circumstances, faced being cooped up in hutches for a large part of the day. The hens came to us as an emergency placement and after a brief negotiation with their owner, they were here to stay. Although they were slightly underweight, they were in good health apart from Marjorie, who had a persistent cough, was scratching at her crop and had a very rattly chest. The vet diagnosed a chest infection and also explained that she had developed sour crop at a young age and because this had not been dealt with, the infection had spread further. The vet prescribed intensive treatment for ten days and although the cough has eased and she appears a lot
brighter, we now know she will have crop problems for life and will keep a close eye on her every day. Unity is a lovely black hen with a splash of red feathers on her head. She is much shyer than the others but has already settled in well to our daily routine and is happily forming bonds with our established flock. Jasmine spent the first year of her life in a battery cage and of the four, she was the most underweight. Although she is only a little hen, she has a huge character and is never far from us when we are doing the daily clean out of the hen run. Jean is also an ex-battery hen and it is clear to see that she also suffered in the cages. Her feathers are quite tatty and she was initially very timid. She has had lots of cuddles since she came to us and has subsequently calmed down a great deal.
Following our talk about the egg industry at the West Midlands Vegan Festival, we are delighted to once more have the opportunity to bring that talk to the Bristol Vegfest on Saturday 26 May. The Vegfest event runs from Friday 25 May through to Sunday 27th and is celebrated as being the largest vegan festival in Europe! Our talk is at 12:00 in the Animal Sanctuary talks tent, so come along and be amazed at what a fascinating creature the humble hen is!

If you think that testing cosmetics on animals is a thing of the past - think again! In fact, over 80% of countries still allow animal testing for cosmetics. With this shocking figure in mind, Ricky Gervais has recently helped to launch a new initiative, called Cruelty-Free International The easy to
navigate site provides information as to who is still carrying out the tests, what type of tests are performed - and how you can help, including tips on how where you can buy cruelty free cosmetics, and how you can campaign to end the cruelty. Visit the Cruelty-Free International today and discover the part you can play in helping animals all over the world!

PAWING provides shelter, care and veterinary treatment for a small amount of unwanted/mistreated animals, and we also support any small charity that exists to directly and legally help animals and will work to raise funds not only for our own rescued creatures, but also for sanctuaries, groups and individuals by promoting appeals on our website. PAWING will help campaigns to help any animal in need by adding links to ongoing requests for help. PAWING supports vegan ethics and strives to promote the benefits of a vegan lifestyle. We depend entirely upon donations from the public.
