A huge THANK YOU to The One Earth Shop!

PAWING founder Susan Edmonds with rescued Labrador, George

We would like to extend our warmest thanks to the One Earth Shop which raised a grand total of £48.00 in an Easter Raffle in aid of PAWING! The money couldn’t come at a better time (read below!) and to have been chosen as the beneficiary meant the world to us - thank you again! Check out this link to find out more about this cracking all-vegan goldmine of a store!

Exciting times for our rescued hens!

Work to improve and enlarge the living space for our rescued hens has begun in earnest. With a healthy population of foxes living nearby we know the importance of fox-proofing the run, so the huge job of laying footings (to make it difficult for predators to tunnel into the run) for the perimeter of the extension has been completed. We are due to embark upon the next stage, which involves building a frame and attaching weld mesh at some point next week. Once a secure roof has been put in place, the run will be near completion.

..we take

introductions
of new hens
to our
existing hens
very seriously.

Once finished, the run will contain a removable separator, which effectively splits it into two. This is a vital aspect of the new housing because we take introductions of new hens to our existing hens very seriously. By keeping new and old hens separate, but still allowing them to see each other, we will be able to allow them to establish a new ‘pecking order’ without the risk of injury (or in extreme cases, death). Once the hens are used to each other, the separator will be removed, allowing the two little flocks to become one!

George and Dotty look on..

We have been intending to do this for some time, as our current introduction arrangements mean that the process of the hens meeting and living with each other are taking longer than necessary and as we aim to reduce the stress of ‘competing’ hens to the lowest degree possible, the new run should be the perfect setting for speeding up harmonious relationships! Sadly, this is all down to funds. The last few months have stretched our finances so tightly, we have had to delay the building time and again in order to have the funds to help provide veterinary care for animals in need - and food for our own animals. Materials have already cost over £200 and more are still needed, so we are desperate for funds to help us finish the hen run. Please consider making a donation to help us bring happiness to our beautiful little hens. Thank you.
